Venezuelan Detainees Released Under Strict Conditions, Impacting Their Freedom
On Thursday, the Venezuelan government released 99 detainees who had been involved in protests following the controversial July 28, 2024 elections. However, these individuals face strict conditions, including a travel ban, restrictions on media interactions, and mandatory court appearances every 30 days. Families of the detainees reported that they are also prohibited from communicating with one another. Human rights organization Foro Penal confirmed the release of at least 52 individuals, highlighting the ongoing issue of political prisoners in Venezuela, which they estimate to number 902 as of December 20. The government denies the existence of political prisoners, framing the release as a measure to uphold human rights.
